When I hear "terrible thing," I think of someone shooting people. "Terrible things" are usually accompanied by the loss of innocent life. "Unfortunate incident" or "tasteless act" might come closer in this instance. Of course, realizing that you've had a dog pee into your mouth, perhaps you're more sensitive to urination-related incidents.
