Well, you're both presenting the far sides of the situation, surprisingly enough.

There are many Americans who are lazy and entitled - I know, I've had to wade through the hiring process for the past five years. But other points that both of you and ent have presented are part of it. To some degree, we deserve that entitlement, given that it isn't right to expect someone to wake up at midnight w/o a choice to get working on whatever some dude decides he wants. Otoh, more people need to realize that they DO have to jump through a few more hoops to deserve the jobs to which they think they are entitled.
My father worked overtime on holidays to make as much money as possible, and there are plenty of men and women who still jump at those chances; however, we're at the point where the kids coming into the workforce have no idea that is even a concept. They've been too protected. I have some sympathy for people Jobs's position, but not much.

You did not say it, but citing the importance of cheaper supplies suggests it.
