Also, was Aemon said makes me sad, because that book was on my "to do (someday)" list, but that sounds very discouraging.

Well, I know quite a few people who like it, so it depends on your reading style. There is a bit more political content than I favor, but I was much too caught up in the whole expedition/goal to want to stop. That doesn't sound like a glowing recommendation, but I mostly mean that while there were a few parts I thought were boring, they were interesting enough not to stop me. I mean, think about it - the sections on preparation, politics and interpersonal relationships might seem unnecessary, but are really important to the whole (if it's going to be anything approaching a realistic story). I mean, you've got highly intelligent people stuck together for the rest of their lives? In a small area? It's worth discussing the attitudes and issues.
