We don't celebrate communist holidays in the US (e.g., May Day).
Last year I learned it existed; tonight the Ukrainian girl in my norsk kurs explained to us how it is a product of the Soviet revolution and I realized, "Ooooh, THAT is why I never heard of it in America."
