But I don't think they should be allowed to vote while imprisoned, definitely. If you violate the social contract between you, your society, and the government, you certainly don't get to keep it anyway! Considering some of the ridiculous crimes that can be considered felonies, though, as well as the fact that I have some faith in the redemption of individuals, I think that PERMANENTLY is too far.
The issue has always been whether (and when) they should regain their voting rights AFTER release. Most states allow voting rights to be regained after a period of years (how many varies by locale,) but FL is among the few that have preserved the lifetime forfeiture. Florida became (more) notorious in 2004 for an automated "purge" of felons from its voting registrar, as well as denying voting rights to felons convicted in other states that have since restored their voting rights. It is not enough for the state where the crime was committed to restore a felons voting rights: Florida requires the governor of FL do so.
