Big cats, like small cats, like to play - one of the biggest problem for them in captivity is boredom. Unless the lion is mentally retarded, it knew it couldn't get through the glass and was play attacking.
Your assumption that "if the barrier wasn't there the lion would kill and eat that baby in an instant" shows that you perhaps need to find out more about them - it might well have killed the child, because big cats play hard, in much the same way as most house cats kill birds and mice they don't have any interest in eating.
