I moved from one campus apartment to another in my third year, and I didn't even tell my roommates- I'm not even sure they knew I was there. They were party animals to say the least, and I'm not, so...yeah. They didn't pay much attention to the guy attempting to study physics. Good luck with breaking the news to your roommates- I'm sure it will go fine.
I've been living with one of them for 6 of the past 8 years. 
... he also has to replace my rent payments in August, which will be a problem for him. (though not a big one, people are always looking for apartments in New York.)
