Do you have any particular source for all that info on mid-19th century America? I keep intending on reading about the period but never quite manage to do so.

I have the most trustworthy source of all, by which I mean Wikipedia, by which I mean don't take a word of it for gospel. The only books I currently own on mid-19th-century America are on the American Civil War (Shelby Foote's trilogy is amazing). It's an interesting period though, from everything I've been reading on Wikipedia while researching for this travel writing. I'd do more creditable research, but frankly I don't have the time and I'm not trying to be a real historian anyway.
