You know it's easier with things like this to sit back and enjoy it Isaac Send a noteboard - 13/06/2012 02:39:35 PM
I've actually got a nice set of Tarot cards lying around and books on astrology, it's interesting stuff, just like my SF/F novels and D&D rulebooks. Utter garbage, but the methodology can be fun and it's nice to practice cold reading people, which is a handy skill to be good at. Where possible it's nice to explain to people on the edge that no, the planets really don't exert influence and no, vaccines are perfectly safe, those are neither entirely true but that's the problem. Without expertise the curious layman is simply limited to how good an 'expert' is as convincing them which tends to be controlled a lot by how pretty a picture of the world you can paint for them. Trying to explain the gravitational influence of Neptune on them is roughly the same as the 10 ton boat their neighbor parked in their driveway tends to result in them actually using a good sense of reason to say something like 'well yeah, but that's had a huge impact on my life, so so could Neptune, and that's on everyone, it's like everyone has a yacht parked in the lot next to theirs!' [that's nearly a perfect quote of a real case by the way]. The various all-natural diet/lifestyle crap is irritating but it's the mindset itself, not the specific incarnation, that's the problem, and there's little you can do about that.

The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.
