I don't like the theory of dark energy, either, but how do you account for the bending of light?

My understanding was that the way scientists were able to say that there is evidence for dark energy is not just because they stick it into equations and it accounts for everything, but also because light that travels long distances is distorted by it. Or is that yet another thing that could be an example of time being distorted rather than space?
