Well Dark Matter certainly distorts stuff, we know how much light should bend going round an object of X mass and when we see it do the bending of a 5x Mass we can say 'okay, where the fuck are 4X of mass hiding? mass which is also dark to any other detection method' Thus 'Dark Matter', is really totally unrelated to Dark Energy. Anyway the evidence for Dark Energy is pretty much that acceleration itself and as mentioned, there is *no* difference between acceleration and gravity in General Relativity, so as gravity can bend light so can acceleration and so too would pockets of faster or slower time.
My understanding was that the way scientists were able to say that there is evidence for dark energy is not just because they stick it into equations and it accounts for everything, but also because light that travels long distances is distorted by it. Or is that yet another thing that could be an example of time being distorted rather than space?
