Ah, I should have known you covered them in the Book of Beasts. Joel Send a noteboard - 07/07/2012 11:00:20 AM
It's possible that it might have been an armadillo, though I didn't get the sense that it was alive and moving, whatever it was. It was a big one, if it was, but it certainly made enough clattering beneath me to be something jumping into my undercarriage. I'd still go with the shredded tire theory if pressed, but I wouldn't swear it wasn't an armadillo.

I happen to have written several articles on armadillos of various types, including that one.

Well, you know what they say: Everything is bigger in TX. Freaky little creatures, and I can attest to the jumping. I was driving home from an early night at work about 3AM one time and saw one about 20' in front of me at 50 mph, so I instinctively (and successfully) tried to straddle him with my tires. It worked perfectly, but right as I felt the thump under my butt I remembered that was exactly the wrong thing to do. Apparently no one told that possum I met among the veritable zoo encountered along the way to KS just before leaving the States, because he made me come to a complete stop on a one lane country road (again at 3AM) while he stared motionless at me as if to say, "Look, pal, I was here first."
