hopefully your family will get over their issues... my family was weird early on too. but now, even my dad who doesn't really like dogs will sit in my house for like a hour at a time... he's maybe the worst one, but only when he's with his wife. alone he'll hang out longer. my mom is allergic to the cats but she sleeps here just fine. so perhaps if you get nice animals they will want to visit anyway!
