I have been shot at and it is pretty damn scary

I like to think I would never leave my child but I have been shot at when I was unarmed and not expecting it and I know I was running before I really even knew what was happening. I didn't have a kid with me of course, hell I was pretty much a kid myself at the time, but when I heard bullets hitting the trees around me I didn't think about my friends or why he was shooting at us I just ran through the woods wearing nothing but cutoffs and sneakers but didn't even notice I was bleeding pretty much all over until I finally stopped because I couldn't run anymore. Trapped in a theater filled with smoke and people dying around you can't be much easier.
I truly believe I wouldn't have acted the way this man did but I do know what panic can do and anyone who thinks they are immune to panic is kidding themselves. When you panic thinking stops and instinct kicks in. If the instincts that kicks in is to protect then you throw yourself in front of bullet even if you would never had done it if you had time to think about it or you run even if that isn't what you would do if you were thinking. All this really tells us about him is that he panicked and I have trouble faulting him for that. There have cases where parents ran out of burning buildings without their children then ran back in when the realized what they had done. Coward for leaving or hero for runinng into a burning building?
I do wonder why anyone would bring an infant to a midnight showing of Batman.

If you were in the Aurora theater with your infant, would you leave them him and run to safety?

If I were in the theatre I would rather die than expose my child to harm.

Yes, people are programmed to survive but they are also programmed to protect their young.

Programmed or conditioned behavior is not really worthy of praise or scorn, only conscious choice is

Where did you see that he shoved the kid to the floor?

I was using shoving as in "putting somewhere" no actually pushing down.

way to blame the victim. that doesn't help. no one goes to a theater worrying they might get shot *NM*

I'm not blaming them for getting shot, just being so rude and thoughtless to begin with.
