The article said "allegedly," and he didn't say that in his comment, so ...? Maybe you've read up on it elsewhere?
Besides, how do you know that "protecting the child" couldn't include thinking that hiding it under a seat would be the best way to do this? I'm not saying it is, or that that is what he thought, but the truth is that there are different ways of reacting under pressure, and hiding and fleeing are the two most likely. And while you may not be trying to self-righteous, judging anyone in this situation is going to defeat that statement somewhat.
