The UK's star may have paled abroad compared to the 18-19th centuries, but less than the average Brit seems to think.
The comment of my neighbour afterward was that it was amazing to be reminded that before they simply remade the same movies over and over again, Hollywood were literally living off British creativity

which I'd argue is the most notable field in which the UK somehow still keeps dominating the world. Although I wouldn't exactly include rap music in that, so their choice of which songs to play longer sections of, or have live performances of, was a bit odd at times...
So all and all, Boyle not only made it all british to the bone, but also succeeded at making it extremely accessible to the average foreigner.
I don't exactly think you (or I) would count as the "average" foreigner, Dom.
Or anybody at this site, for that matter. I'm not sure how accessible it all was to people who don't live in the West, or even to people in the West who don't know English and aren't too familiar with British history and pop culture.
So, who watched the Opening Ceremony?

I think it was a re-imagining of Saruman transforming Isengard into an Orc-production facility. *NM*

More of a de-imagining, I think, given what inspired Tolkien. *NM*

I liked the forging of the rings. Not a huge fan of the extended 80s dance party. *NM*

It seemed like a glorified Super Bowl halftime show - no scale and scope
