Pro-lifers dislike Romney going to a Planned Parenthood fundraiser and writing them a check; pro-choicers dislike him saying he would defund it.

Gun advocates dislike Romney signing the MA assault weapons ban; anti-gun advocates dislike him joining the NRA.

Robamacare foes dislike Romney creating it; Robamacare fans dislike his pledge to repeal it his first day in office.

To that we can add that fundies dislike Ryan saying Ayn Rand is the foundation of his philosophy and secularists dislike him saying Aquinas is.

I just got through debating this with an ardent Republican on FB who said I "don't see how vulnerable the Dems are." I see it starkly; the problem is one sides vulnerability does not guarantee the other side victory with even the worst candidates. The Dems problem is Americans rightly see the country facing multiple grave crises at home and abroad, so they voted for a strong active government Obama did not deliver. The GOPs problem is that the public desire for strong active government did not disappear just because Obama frustrated it, so an anti-government campaign is still not a winner. Honestly, it is surprising such a deeply patriotic country bought into "government is always the problem" as long as it did.
