Breivik will always be a threat. Joel Send a noteboard - 26/08/2012 01:36:34 AM
. . . why bother with a timed sentence at all? Why not just sentence him to life? Will they let him out when he's 85 and can't harm anyone? Would the point of that make people feel better about themselves, make them think they're civilized or something like that? I don't get it.

I mean, yes, it was horrific, and yes, he doesn't seem like the type to reform. But the point of this system (and other parole-like systems) is that if he can be found, beyond a doubt, that he's reformed, he feels remorse, he's not a danger to anyone, etc. then there's no point in keeping him locked up.

Exhibiting completely different behavior to produce completely different pyschological evaluations, and a whole decade meticulously planning the worst shooting massacre in history, while carefully avoiding anything that might draw police attention, demonstrate that. Unless he gets Alzheimers or something, he will never lose that capacity, and has shown he can conceal both the ability and intent for the entire period he is ineligible for parole. He did not just snap one day and start shooting; he spent ten years of detailed planning and equipping for the "perfect" killing spree, going out of his way to avoid all suspicion throughout that time. There is simply no way he can prove he is not still doing the same thing right now, and never will be.
