The odd thing is I know no liberal who would support, would not strongly condemn, the approach most appealing to me: Reinstate the draft, letting folks opt out at the cost of voting rights. Curiously, neither side debating "European style socialisms" merits ever mentions that conscription (at least of men) is the European norm.

Let's try this again: conscription is very far from the "norm" in Europe, with only a handful of small countries still practicing it - plus the two big ones who can't seem to make up their mind on whether or not they are European, Russia and Turkey. Considering your views of both countries, I rather doubt that you'd seriously claim they define the European norm.

Though Germany still had it until about this time last year. Fair enough then; I think ending conscription was as much a mistake in continental Europe as it was in the US, for the same horde of reasons, but cannot accurately call it the European norm anymore.
