I despise win/loss records for QBs, like they were baseball pitchers or something. So that is not a valid stat comparsion, you're right. To a large extent, receivers don't drop so many balls that it would drastically throw off a QB's numbers. It can, however, be argued that inferior receivers don't run proper routes, thus negatively affecting the QB's numbers. With that being said, a QB's numbers would eventually reflect their talent. A great QB, like Peyton Manning, can make medicore receivers look good, thereby improving his numbers despite the modest talents of his receivers. It's because of how well he directs the receivers and how well he throws the ball. A bad QB will throw the ball all over the place, forcing the receiver to make more difficult catches.

Win-loss records for pitchers can be just as bad, though. A pitcher on a team with a great offense has a better chance at getting wins than a pitcher on a team that couldn't hit a softball. Even the best pitchers can't throw a shutout every start. Better pitchers will still generally get more wins, and truly great pitchers can partly overcome a poor offense, but every pitcher's win-loss record is affected by it to some degree. It's just that wins are the big, easy, sexy pitcher's stat that people like to throw up. Stats like ERA and WHIP are more under the pitcher's control than wins. And strikeouts by themselves, while under the pitcher's control, don't tell the whole story without other stats. If they did, Nolan Ryan would be the best pitcher in history, and clearly he's not.

True, but there is still some level of control with the goaltender's ability. A hall-of-fame talent goaltender can greatly make up for the deficiencies of his teammates, while a good goaltender can get into the hall of fame because of a stellar defense. Likewise, a good pitcher in baseball might be bailed out by stellar defense, whereas a great pitcher with a poor defense would need to strikeout more batters or induce simple ground or pop outs.

Yes, that is all true. But none of it helps make a direct stats-to-stats comparison any more useful in determining which top-level goaltender is better than another. I suspect it's the same for your quarterbacks. The stats aren't 100 percent their own, so stats alone don't tell you which is better.
