Also, perhaps I say it as should not, but I do not think Cracked a reliable source. Joel Send a noteboard - 19/09/2012 10:36:44 PM
They are not scholars, only comedy writers. Actually, they are not even that: They are snide bloggers with a good research department (i.e. people who read a lot of stuff online; that will produce cytogenesis any second. ) They also say Jackie Robinson was not the first black major leaguer, because of a couple of siblings who played for a team that disbanded in the 1880s before anything worthy of the name "professional baseball" existed. They also maintain that Lindbergh was nothing special, because a couple of Brits previously flew non-stop from Newfoundland to Ireland, which is true, but completely ignores the "God is my copilot" aspect of Lindberghs first SOLO flight.

Hence Cracked attributes stereotypical pirate language to the West Country dialect prominent in Stevensons book and the film adaptation thereof, completely ignoring the laundry list of West Country pirates our resident Brits cited, and snoops observation that that is only logical given the West Countrys leading role in British shipping during the Age of Sail. Turns out Stevenson and Hollywood did not just arbitrarily decide to give pirates accents and vocal mannersisms unknown outside England just because it sounded cool. Stevenson probably did not think it especially cool, but just figured it was typical of British pirates, because it most likely was.
