The whole point of charity is that it allows the giver to decide what part of society they want to help. Helping someone other than themselves is commendable, whoever it is they choose to help.

The whole point of taxation is that it makes distribution of resources dependent on the political process. Just because a charitable act is commendable for being selfless doesn't necessarily make it the right distribution of the nation's resources.

IMO, private acts of charity should always be something that happens after society has had its say, because the wealth isn't truly private until then. So I think there's a problem with the way we currently do things. But that doesn't make the people who are giving to charity any less deserving of praise for doing so, whether they are donating to United Way or Tims of America.
