You dehumanize them. It justifies your own hate and rage without forcing you to try to look at it from their point of view and see the decent human in them.
Of course it is a lot easier to just paint everybody with the "hateful bigot" label if they see it differently than you. It has been an extremely effective tool in the fight over the definition of marriage. People on both sides are guilty of it.
