Through the Northern 1/3rd of Iraq. Go look at maps of what used to be the Persian Empire and remember that the Arabic world has a looooooooonnnnnngggggggg memory. It all ties back into sunni v shite and Arab v Persian.
Iran has stated the desire/intention of restablishing the Caliphate. A major step towards being able to do this is unfettered access to the Med. As for Syria allowing them unrestricted use of their ports, you better believe they would. Iraq has always been the cork in Iran's bottle. It is why Bush 1 was not allowed to take out Saddam, and why he did not believe that Bush 2 would. It is why we spent so much time trying to rebuild the government in Iraq, and why many folks are pissed that Obama's negotiatoprs faild to keep any basing rights.
