We wouldn't be having this discussion if it hadn't been so long. Legolas Send a noteboard - 29/09/2009 07:46:21 PM
I thought she only said it was a memory she could live with and that she would rather the whole thing was dropped since it causes her family harm every time it's brought up. Of course this talk started after she received her settlement from a private lawsuit.

He drugged and raped, including anally, a 13 year old girl. He ran from his bail, he paid her off, he's never denied it. He's used his power, his money, his fame and his influence to run and hide from punishment, and indeed in doing so extended the harm caused to the girl, who had to put up with her name being revealed and the details gone over everytime his name cropped up in the media. He is and always was a class A scumbag, and if they can finally make him serve his time, they should.

If this man wasn't famous and talented, I doubt we'd even be having this discussion.

What should have happened, and I don't understand why it didn't, was him being tried for it upon arrival in France. France refusing to extradict its citizens is one thing, letting them get away with crimes quite another - and that part may well have something to do with his being a famous director and Camilla's article on how the French give stars a different status. By now it has been a very long time, and while I'm inclined to agree with you in your interpretation of the woman's words - that she's accepted it and moved on and wants all the media hype to be over, rather than actually forgiven him - the point remains that by stirring up the flames again after thirty years, the woman has to endure more media attention than ever before.

If nothing had happened, the man would've died of old age in Europe with the verdict still hanging over his head, without the Californian courts ever needing to rule either way, and the victim would've been left in peace. There was no danger of recidivism or other girls being raped. Now suddenly there's an ugly diplomatic row that doesn't really benefit anyone, least of all the victim. If the suggestions that the US brought up this case again in the context of the Swiss banking scandal are true, that would be fairly tasteless.
