it's how much the malpractice insurance IS. Even for vets it's a reasonable chunk of change--I can't imagine what it is for doctors.

A doctor has to balance his expenses and income in order to eat, correct? Correct. If he has to pay malpractice, he raise his income which derives from his prices (thus his prices go up). The more malpractice is (and it's quite high), the more his prices need to go up (I'm assuming is other expenses are relatively fixed compared to "yes" and "no" malpractice). ECON101, dude.

And your comparison to car insurance makes zero sense, because the driver has nothing to do with setting the retail price of the car (beyond marketing influences). Logic. Fail.


so the car insurance analogy is pretty apt, since almost all states require the driver to carry it. i'm sure there are doctors who set their own prices out there, but for the most part the prices are set by the hospitals and HMOs, etc. i don't personally know any doctors, but the ones i've gone to don't set their own prices when i've asked them. their prices are set by the group they belong to.
