I am beginning to wonder if China might formally annex North Korea, and the implications of that.

It takes a lot for a guy like me to say "Fuck it, take them out," but with North Korea I'm there. At this point I think even China would turn a blind eye... North Korea has been as much a threat to them as anyone else recently.

But you're right, it has to be S. Korea's call. The North can't hit us... but it will hit them.
Because YOU are right that a nuclear North Korea is at least as much a threat to China as to anyone else. Part of the subtext in all this is that Chinas proximity as much as our militarys made North Korea their de facto satellite, but nuclear weapons could change that. The Kims (or whoever calls the shots there) had little choice but to do as China told them so long as they had the PLA looking over their shoulder, but intermediate range nuclear missiles deter Chinese invasion at least as much as an American one. A truly rogue nuclear North Korea is a huge threat to China as well as to South Korea and Japan; the difference is China can do something about it.
Then the issue is: What of the REST of Korea? Perhaps the question is not "Would China let the US occupy all of Korea" but "would the US let China occupy it"?

Again? Didn't they "tear up the armistice" a few years ago?

They said they were "no longer obligated" after the second nuke test, and would resist attacks.

Not to diminish the role of China in this but you're bypassing the actual issue

Seoul isn't the only urban location, refering to it simply saves time

Well, but one would assume that after an initial salvo the South Koreans would counterstrike.

Definitely, but you still get a high civilian body toll

Tactical question: Better by daylight to aid evacuation, or night to avoid detection?

Daylight, hands down I think

No, I meant daylight to aid evacuation or night to prevent detecting an attack.

Night favors us tactically, but it wouldn't keep the attack secret
