... is that so far everyone has gotten #6 in spite of my deliberate attempt to make it sound like the story of a homeless orphan girl turned hooker. Maybe if I'd substituted 'craven' in for cowardly and left out Kansas?
6. First published in 1899, this book tells the story of an orphan girl after her home is hit by a cyclone, and her travels and encounters as a street walker with a number of cowardly, heartless, and stupid men in a land totally unlike her home in rural Kansas.


I liked the way you phrased it. I thought it was fairly clever. Your suggestions here would probably improve it even further, but that said, as soon as I read "1899", "girl" and "home is hit by a cyclone", I knew what it was — to the point where I had to stop and read the "street walker" bit twice to make sure I wasn't seeing things.
