It definitely does help in Spanish-speaking countries to speak at least tolerable Spanish, and reaching that level is not that hard, definitely not for Americans (reaching perfect fluency is a somewhat different story, and of course there are differences between dialects).

Yeah, my sister said there's tons of Meetup groups for people who want to learn Spanish, so once I'm a little conversational, I'll totally do it.

I am a very visual learner. I learned English by reading (Tolkien - not a book for a beginner!)

What's interesting is how stimulating it is to learn something. I feel like my brain is more awake and nimble even at work things.
