Unsustainable costs are already making city living harder again, after a period of relative affordability that marked the end of urban decline and beginning of gentrification (at least in the US). Technology is improving - I conduct the vast majority of my law practice without needing to have face-to-face meetings. Of course, I still need to go to courts from time to time, and those are fixed in their location.

However, if safety concerns increase as time goes on (see subject line), then there could be an increased push for telecommuting and other alternative arrangements.

I could see telecommuting trials to have some issues concerning due process and legitimacy of juries and so forth, but given all the security concerns with schools these days, it is kind of absurd that we run the kids through an education factory in a concentrated location, when you could easily purchase a curriculum guide online and take classes and lectures from home. It might actually foster a greater sense of self-reliance in students, if they don't have a teacher standing over them.

There are many things that could actually be done just as well at remove with modern technology.
