Not if they don't recognize that they need help Tom Send a noteboard - 19/10/2009 09:30:59 PM
People love to deceive themselves. Popular deceptions include:

1. "I can change the things I don't like about my significant other"
2. "My kids won't be like that"
3. "It won't hurt if I eat one more"

The list goes on and on. However, one of the most damaging deceptions that people engage in is when they stay in bad relationships because they confuse pity with love, or think that suffering in the name of someone they care about is somehow noble.

That's not to say that bailing on a relationship because you have to work at it is the answer. However, you have to understand that YOU CANNOT CHANGE SOMEONE ELSE, and OTHER PEOPLE DO NOT CHANGE OVERNIGHT AND NEVER CHANGE UNLESS THEY WANT TO. A relationship should be about working together to build something good and worth keeping. It shouldn't be about your bf beating himself up in bipolar fits and allowing that to make you miserable. There needs to be a light at the end of the tunnel, and that light needs to be something other than an oncoming train.
Political correctness is the pettiest form of casuistry.

– Procopius
