No more or less ridiculous. It just does not yet have the aura of respectability that a couple millenia usually gives to a cult.
The way that we view Scientology is not much different the way that the Romans and Hellenistic Greeks viewed Judaism and Christianity. Personally, I find the myths of the Greco-Romans to be far richer than Judeo-Christian myths. But hey, the JC cult got converts, despite having a far less intriguing back story.
What the future holds? I don't know. Could be that Scientology will die out. Could be that it will thrive.
