Aside from the obvious vegetarian viewpoint, would we agree that it's a "man" thing to insist upon a big ol' hunk of beef (or other substantial meat portion) at most meals?
I would say this is primarily American, but that's too restrictive. "Western" may be too broad, but we'll lean that way anyway. And I still think it's more of a male requirement than female.

I expect it's due to worrying that a non-meat meal won't be as substantial or filling.
This appears to be the case with my roommate. I made a really rich stew last night, but the potato to beef ratio wasn't right, in his opinion. So weird. It was very filling and nice, but he has the perception that he needs more meat.
