I have only been to one and that was just to see what it was the base off limits list.

As far straight bars go there are all types. If you want to relax and meet people stay away form the meat market dance clubs and look for a small sports bars/pub. Usually there are people playing darts and pool and just generally relaxing. Go up and ask to play a game, it doesn't matter if you are any good. The vast majority of people are there for the same reason you are, meet people and have a good time.

I would suggest going a least little early and keep in mind a girl going into a strange bar alone has to keep her security in mind so trust your instincts and stay safe.

By the way do they actually have gay/lesbian bars? I would have guessed that one or the other would be more typical.
