A veterinarian's first concern is animal welfare. If they violate this concern they are in violation of their oath. I'm going to assume they are at least not going to advocate anything less than animal welfare. There are plenty of jobs for veterinarians. There is no reason for a veterinarian to work anywhere they do not want to.



No, I'm saying that what you are giving an example of average for is entirely different than "Average" chicken house. Would you have been happier if I had said "majority" instead? are you seriously going to hem and haw over diction?



How is that different than trimming the tips of a cat or dog's toe nails? Or a horse's feet? Chickens get into fights just like any animal. Chickens (like pigs) can also turn cannibalistic if given the opportunity to develop a taste for it. Is it really such a horrible preventative action to cut the sharp point off the bird's beak? (In case you're curious, that's why they don't tag pigs and dock their tails on occasion)

I really could care less how you got your animals. I was mostly just saying that breeding for an extreme is hardly atypical and in many other presentations perfectly acceptable by the greater community.



Exactly. Funny how that works. So don't you think the companies would be maximizing the health of the chickens? Oh wait, they are. Yes, they take their profits into account in regards to their methods, but that's called "running a business". It sucks that a balance between economics and maximum animal comfort should be necessary, but the people working for these companies have to eat too you know. Regardless of what they eat.




I think it's quite human to kill animals to eat them. As we do it all the time and always have. Circle of Life and all that jazz. A slaughter house will never, ever be a nice work environment. That doesn't mean that what's going on at the slaughter house is inhumane or "wrong". Unless of course you think it's wrong to kill an animal in order to eat it, but in that case, that's your personal belief and no one makes you do so.

Tell me what's more "inhumane". Cold, snow and predators or a perfectly moderated threat-less chicken house? Food at their wingtips or skuffling through dirt? The chickens are well cared for, their nutrition is impeccable balanced and if quarters are tight they are not so tight they are hazardous to their health. If it was, the producers would be losing birds, and thus profit, and thus doing something differently. as you said, healthy birds equal profit. Why does everyone seem convinced the industry is out to do the opposite?
