It was entirely clear what you advocated Danny do at the funeral. everynametaken Send a noteboard - 11/11/2009 03:02:56 AM
In addition, I have no desire to sit here and argue with you. For your information though, I do have training at the collegiate level in religion, I have had training in the past at the church level, and I listen at times to professionally produced lectures on religion (not just Christianity) by leading scholars and theologians. So, you are simply incorrect in your assumption that I am unschooled in theological issues.

Secondly, you did not need to use a personal pronoun to make it clear what YOU thought Dan should do at the funeral or how he should handle the mother and grandmother. You were clearly speaking from YOUR point of view. That makes it about you.
As far as your claim that the three branches of Christianity somehow "back you" and not me. I have no idea what you are talking about. I have been to enough funerals in my life to know that I have never seen a Catholic priest or a Protestant pastor ever start trying to present a message of "getting saved" in the midst of the grieving family. Probably because they are mature enough to know that a funeral is not the time or place for such a presentation. You apparently, in all your zeal, make no distinction between appropriate and not appropriate.

Here is a novel idea. Take Danny's post, your initial response, his response, and then you response and present them to your pastor. Ask him if he thinks what you advocate is the appropriate way to handle the situation.

But wine was the great assassin of both tradition and propriety...
