I didn't say that it was snobby to do that. LadyLorraine Send a noteboard - 25/01/2010 04:27:57 PM
I said people were saying snobby things.

Just because something has always been made one way, doesn't mean that suddenly moving that method to a different region will blemish the product. In fact, Artsapat's article shows that moving the production can improve the overall quality.

Protecting the brand for your country's economy is one thing and fair enough, but that's no call to snub the hard work of others. If it was made like scotch and tastes like scotch, then whatever it is called, it is still scotch. I say a compromise would be perfectly fair. The Asians can call it Scotch, but they have to put some sort of clarifier that it is not made in Scotland, or can't put things like "authentic" or such. So they could have a label like "Taiwanese Scotch Whisky". They've done that with Cheddar and other cheeses, and I can still tell the difference between good cheddar and bad cheddar. (but then, I'm a cheddar-whore)

Random only slightly related note: I was so confused when our Whole Foods store labeled Cheddar as being Irish. So much for their "cheese experts".

Hmm, I probably should have been listening to that heart murmur lecture. Oops.

So then if a Scotch Whisky is made in Scotland... - 25/01/2010 05:32:42 PM 469 Views
But the Taiwanese brand doesn't meet the standards for Scotch. - 25/01/2010 05:54:43 PM 353 Views
I mean the standards of taste and quality - 25/01/2010 06:52:10 PM 353 Views
But that's not really the point, is it? - 25/01/2010 07:33:00 PM 328 Views
There's nothing snobby about protecting a brand which makes a lot of money for your country. - 25/01/2010 04:03:45 PM 509 Views

You still get my point. - 25/01/2010 04:53:33 PM 318 Views
Why should they have to label it that? - 25/01/2010 04:59:13 PM 353 Views
Because Scotch indicates a type of Whisky, not ONLY its location. - 25/01/2010 05:09:09 PM 347 Views
There is, as far as I'm aware, nothing stopping them from doing that. - 25/01/2010 05:13:14 PM 354 Views
And see, there's a difference in my mind. - 25/01/2010 05:18:33 PM 355 Views
