On one hand, they do preserve the recipes and flavors to certain products. This is good.

On the other hand, the impact on the end product of some of the requirements are certainly up for debate and arguably placed just to create legal monopolies for the producers.

And in the end, I think that a label is just a label. I can easily agree with only certain producers being able to label "authentic" or "heritage" or such, but just the product name itself? In my mind, it's just sneaky monopolies. It's not like people won't bend the rules to breaking all over the place anyways. Anyone who really cares about the product will know the difference anyways. I mean, I don't even drink that much and I know the big difference between Tennessee Whiskey and Bourbon Whiskey. Because I like Whiskey and wanted to know. What matters is the product. Yes, if suddenly letting someone in Argentina make Champagne changed the flavor, then okay, don't let it be called Champagne. But in this case, the Taiwanese showed they can make Scotch that not only tastes like scotch, but like GOOD scotch.
