I simply believe that it is moot. If the product tastes the same, then it is the product. In such a case, the main motivation for such protection is for the economics of the region. I believe this is a conceivably shaky argument, depending on ones view of legal monopolies.
It also protects the reputation that region has earnt for how it produces that product. They make that product so well that to some people, the name of the region and the product has become confused, much as some people call all vacuums Hoovers - Hoover is still a brand name though, so why shouldn't those regions be able to protect their brand?
They aren't monopolising the product, just their own name which has been built up. Anyone can still make their own version of those products, so it isn't a monopoly.
