your only worth what someone is willing to pay you no matter how much time you spent in school

If a person is convinced that he can find a better job, taking a job that is worse may preclude him from finding the better job. However, it's all a question of judgment. At some point, you have to start thinking about paying bills regardless of what you think.
Of course, people with skills that they can market on their own would be crazy to take bad jobs. For example, someone with a medical, law or accounting degree would be crazy and/or stupid to take a job flipping burgers, because those people could always set up their own office.
I guess what I'm saying is I agree with you in this case but I don't think it's as easy as saying, "Beggars can't be choosers."

No one who studied at University should have to collect other people's garbage. I know I wouldn't.
Presumably somebody who could set up their own shop should at least be expected to do that in lieu of mooching off their friends

I hear what you are both saying, but for me, if I got to the point where I could not support myself and would need to impose on friends or family to get by, I'd take any damn job I could get. I think that's what Tom was saying, too, in the bolded statement above.
I'd take a lot of jobs, but not any

Either way, I didn't mean to defend the poster's friend's attitude, mostly because we don't know more about the case than this short post, but it also always bugs me a bit when people go all "just work whatever!" on someone who is worth a lot more than that.
