That's been my general thoughts. It just makes me feel uncultured. I figure I ought to try it again, seeing as how it's been over a decade.

No, you shouldn't have to try. If it feels off, it probably is. There are some beautiful pieces without high notes. Also there's mezzo sopranos. Also, high notes can be incredible when done by a world-class singer live. I agree that in recording it sounds entirely different.
