My needs are pretty simple and I don't want to pay more than I need to.

What I want is a desktop with cd/dvd anti-virus and all the usual geegaws. Microsoft word, Adobe Reader, intel...the usual and a nice new monitor

Best Buy has a Gateway for $549 plus $170 for the monitor.
I have a Gateway now and have been happy with it so I want to stay with Gateway.

So does this sound like a good deal or would I be paying to much by getting more than I really need?


Since you don't plan on using it for much beyond general internet stuff and word processing, have you considered a netbook? Basically a small laptop, with most in the $200-$400 range. The only caveat is that some/many may not have a CD/DVD drive at all.
