this is super cool, i never knew jews prayed like this, it almost looks and sounds like the way we do it. guess you learn something new everyday...

They were an awful lot like the people Spain had just spent 770 years trying to reclaim their homeland from.

well that explains alot....however a spanish professor once told me it had something to do with the jewish people have all the money in spain cuz muslims and christians werent allowed to deal in interest or something...so what better way to take someones money then by killing them?

Those who were expelled settled mostly in North Africa, Turkey and some countries of Eastern Europe, Hence forth they were known as Sephardic ( which means Spanish in Hebrew ) and the ones who remained in Western Europe and most of Eastern Europe and Russia are Ashkenazi.
This split was and still is a great source of contention, since it was mostly Ashkenazi immigrants who first started settling and founded Israel. Natuarlly, the Sephardic Jews who came later were sort of screwed.
Today the rift has been mostly bridged, except in the Ultra Orthodox circles which will not inter marry their 'blood'.
