It keeps the next iPhone on people's minds, and take the focus away from some really impressive phones that are all coming to light right now; HTC Evo4g, Droid Incredible, Google Nexus One, Windows Phone 7, HTC HD2, Samsung Galaxy...etc. The competition has been upping their game a ton this year, and I think Apple probably wanted to steal the spotlight back.
I bet Steve Jobs is furious right now.
