I actually like the universe being at stake, or at least something suitably large and massive. "The world" is usually good, but when you're dealing with sci-fi, so what if one world goes down? You have a few dozen more. I have a hard time caring about a storyline that isn't suitably epic. There's just no way to get invested in the drama if all that's at stake is someone's village.
