I do have the impression that SoA (and certainly ToB) swings a bit the other way regarding mages. Legolas Send a noteboard - 04/05/2011 09:40:12 PM
You pretty much need to just go out into the wilds and kill stuff or find random sidequests if you want to have the experience and gear to actually further the plot. And low level Mages are ridiculous dead weight, playing a Warrior class is clearly a major advantage in that game.

Or at least, regarding my Sorcerer protagonist: four or five fireballs almost from the beginning, and by the time I hit ToB it was more like four or five dragon's breaths, which will kill pretty much everything (and is, ironically, my primary way of killing dragons). Sure, said Sorcerer can still get killed with two blows, but since the AI isn't sophisticated enough to move past my tanks to take out the mages behind them, or even to target my mages with spells, that generally isn't a problem.

But then, I did try to do nearly every quest on the way, and you're right, that's where the big XP points are, in BGII as well. The game really *should* feel a bit easy under those circumstances, otherwise it'd be nearly impossible to finish while ignoring most of the side quests, as some players prefer to do. Which if I understand you right is exactly the problem you had with the original BG, that you aren't really given that choice.

I never played BG1 and still REALLY enjoyed BG2. The story seemed a clean enough break to "get it." - 02/05/2011 01:14:23 PM 625 Views
i really recommend going back and playing BG1 then - 02/05/2011 04:19:21 PM 711 Views

Yes. It's not the fault of the games though, they're using D&D rules, so it comes with the territory - 05/05/2011 12:25:21 AM 764 Views
