Ah hah! I found the essay I wanted to post. Very interesting- "What Went Wrong With Civ 5" beetnemesis Send a noteboard - 06/06/2011 12:06:56 AM
I can't repost it here, mostly because there are a bunch of screenshots the author uses to support his points.

It's a bit long, but very much worth the read. Among other things he points out how the global happiness system does the opposite of what it intended, the ever-present penalties on everything from roads to cities, the diplomacy system, and the One Unit Per Tile system.

When I first tried it, I loved the 1UPT system. It felt fresh and interesting. After playing around with it though, and then going back and playing Civ4, it just... didn't seem fun. The article really devastates the 1UPT system, arguing that it is the fundamental cause of all of Civ 5's flaws.

Essentially, 1UPT means that people can't have large armies, because otherwise things would get clogged. The way you force smaller armies is to make things more expensive to produce. But then that means small cities would have nothing to do in the first third of the game, so they had to be buffed. And so on.

But I'm starting to ramble, go read it!
I amuse myself.
