I enjoyed 12 more than most of those you mentioned...

I put down some good money on a PS2 (because for some unfathomable reason the PS3 doesn't play PS2 games) and bought Final Fantasy 12. I loved FF 7&8, 9 was to kiddy for me and I loved 10. And I haven't played a FF in game for so long. I was positively drooling to play a new one, which accounts for my regrettable decision of buying a PS2 just for one game.
So the verdict...bleh. What a letdown. I don't know if FF magic has dulled on me, but the storyline for FF 12 was boring as hell. I didn't care for any characters and thats saying something for a FF game. What am I missing here?

Namely, 8-10. I consider those the dark years of Final Fantasy (and I don't even consider 11 to be part of the series)
I thought 12's biggest flaw was the time it took to actually get into the game. It was 4-5 hours before you get out in the world and another 3-4 until you actually had enough of the gambits to play around/customize with.
The ability board was the best system Final Fantasy has had so far. It seemed to combine 7 and 10's system with great effect.
I found the characters to be more entertaining and less annoying than those of 10. Vaan is less of a pansy than Tidus, Balthier and Fran made a good team (Fran still has the sexiest voice in Video Games to me). What I liked most about the story, is it didn't focus on Vaan. He was just sort of there most of the time, just witnessing the events while everyone else made the decisions. I also found the War Between Empires to be a little refreshing than the typical Big Bad from the start, like FF 6.
Everyone has their own tastes though. To my tastes, 12 was a better RPG than previous incarnations of Final Fantasy.
Castle: This is so weird. I dressed up as him for Halloween.
Beckett: Me too.
~When Castle and Beckett met Gene Simmons.

So being a FF fan and never having played FF 12...

You're not alone- the characters just didn't click for me, nor did the plot

Videogame stories suck the big one, with VERY few exceptions.

Exactly. When I think story here, I think of the individual stories as well as the whole.

Still, it's good for a videogame story.

New games do not feature the storytelling prowess of good TV, films, or novels.
