And yet so many people claim to play them for their stories... lord-of-shadow Send a noteboard - 25/09/2009 03:06:44 AM
..it's an interesting phenomena, to be sure.

I myself have realized over the years that a lot of people claim to love games for their stories, when in fact what they are attracted to is more experiential/identification qualities. Not plot, writing, or three dimensional characters as much as the sum of the experience of the voice-acting, the aforementioned factors, the graphics, the music, the character design, the game design's ability to get the player to empathize for or identify with the protagonist, etc.

The overall experience of progressing through a character-based game and enjoying those sort of factors often gets lumped under the label of "story," and I can understand that.

All three of the games you mentioned have terrible stories - by which I mean plots, character development - by the standards of... well, anything but a video game. But when you're judging those aforementioned experiential factors, they jump up to near the top of the pile, at least for many people.

Exactly. When I think story here, I think of the individual stories as well as the whole. - 26/09/2009 07:13:24 PM 794 Views
Still, it's good for a videogame story. - 26/09/2009 07:54:01 PM 713 Views
I agree, with caveat. - 26/09/2009 11:54:25 PM 822 Views
New games do not feature the storytelling prowess of good TV, films, or novels. - 28/09/2009 01:03:46 AM 732 Views
I disagree. Maybe you're playing the wrong games. *NM* - 28/09/2009 04:51:48 AM 351 Views

And yet so many people claim to play them for their stories... - 25/09/2009 03:06:44 AM 782 Views
The extras lower peoples' standards, but I DO think it's still the story. - 25/09/2009 04:34:30 AM 676 Views
