Sometimes it's kind of weird, in that you'll have just climbed over a mountain, and once you land you'll see them running from the other direction 5 minutes later, but they always catch up.
And worst case, if they disappear? They (usually) respawn where you found them.
EXCEPT.
Uthgerd the Unbroken, the lady fighter you find in that bar in Whiterun. She challenges you to a fistfight, if you beat her, she'll join you. She's glitched, apparently. Don't use her.

Fireball splash damage doesn't hurt you. Walk up to a wall and blast it; no damage.
